The orthodontic bonding bench: separators, seating and bracket removal

The orthodontic tray has two halves. One bends and cuts wire — covered in our pliers buyer’s guide and cutters guide. The other places separators, seats components and removes brackets. This is the bracket-work bench, instrument by instrument.

1. Separation

Before bands are fitted, teeth are separated to create space. Elastic separating pliers stretch an elastomeric module so it can be slipped through the contact point — a small, specific tool that does one job cleanly. Our elastic separating pliers are the standard pattern.

2. Placing and seating

Utility pliers carry and position brackets, bands and archwires. The Weingart utility pliers are the classic all-rounder — fine serrated beaks that grip an archwire to guide it into the slots — while Howe utility pliers give a broad, secure hold for seating and adjusting.

3. Debond: removing brackets

At the end of treatment, brackets are removed and adhesive cleaned up. Bracket-removing pliers shear the bracket base from the enamel with controlled force; tungsten-carbide tips hold their cutting edge through repeated debonds. Our TC bracket-removing pliers are made for this stage.

4. Working the wire alongside

Bonding and wire-work interleave through every appointment, so the bonding bench and the bending bench share a tray. Match cutters to the wire (never cut a wire harder than the tool was built for) per the cutters guide, and choose forming pliers with the pliers buyer’s guide.

5. Provenance and care

Fine beaks and box joints are where orthodontic pliers are won or lost — slop at the joint is felt at the tip.
