Bur blocks and shank sizes: bringing order to rotary chaos

No instrument category breeds like rotary. Burs arrive in fives, migrate between surgeries, and end their days rattling loose in a drawer with their diamond grit grinding against each other. A bur block is the cheapest fix in dentistry for a genuinely expensive problem.

1. Two shanks, never mixed

Handpiece burs run 1.6 mm (1/16″ friction-grip), straight handpiece and lab burs run 2.35 mm (3/32″), and larger lab tools 1/8″. A block drilled for the wrong shank either swallows the bur or refuses it. The 88-hole hardwood bur block solves it with dedicated rows for both 1/8″ and 3/32″ — one home, two shank standards.

2. Why blocks beat pots

A pot stores burs; a block displays them. Upright, spaced, cutting ends untouched: you read the whole inventory in a glance and the diamond never grinds against a neighbour. Edge life improves for the same reason cassette rails beat loose pouches — contact is the enemy.

3. Drills deserve the same discipline

4. Wood in a decontamination world

Hardwood blocks are bench organisers, not sterilisation trays: burs process separately (per HTM 01-05) and return to the block clean. For anything travelling through the autoclave with its holder, choose the stainless cases above.
