Walk a dental catalogue and you will meet gold tips, blue working ends and plated handles. Some of that is identity — a coated instrument is easy to spot on a crowded tray — but the good coatings are doing engineering work. Here is what each one actually changes, and when it is worth paying for.
1. Titanium nitride: hardness where the edge lives
Titanium nitride (TiN) is a ceramic coating a few microns thick, far harder than the steel beneath it. On a working tip it resists the micro-wear that rounds edges, which is why we specify it on the luxating elevator set with micro-serrated tips — the serrations keep their bite through many more cycles than bare steel would. The base metal is still the surgical stainless covered in our steel explainer; the coating just armours the geometry.
2. Gold plasma on scalers and curettes
The gold working ends on a gold plasma coated Gracey set serve two purposes: the plasma-applied layer hardens the blade face, and the colour gives instant contrast against tissue and deposit. One caution — coated blades change how you sharpen. Hone the uncoated lateral face, not the coated one, or you simply strip the layer; technique is in our sharpening guide.
3. Blue titanium: identification and glare control
Blue titanium finishes — as on our blue titanium sculpting set — add modest surface hardness, but their everyday value is visual: a matte coloured tip kills specular glare under the operating light and makes the instrument unmistakable in a shared decon room.
4. Non-stick behaviour at the composite tip
Composite resin loves to drag on bare polished steel. 5. Plated handles: comfort, not performance
Gold-plated handle ends — as on the Weingart utility pliers — are about grip feel, corrosion belt-and-braces where hands live, and frankly, looks. Nothing wrong with that; just know which coatings you are paying for and why.
6. Care
Coatings tolerate normal autoclave cycles (care guide here) but not abrasive scouring — ultrasonic clean, rinse, dry. A worn-through coating is not a failure of the instrument, but it is a signal worth reading; the lifespan guide covers when cosmetic wear becomes functional wear.
