Dental measuring instruments: calipers, gauges and when to use them

Measurement is quiet, precise work that underpins everything from orthodontic set-up to crown clearance. The instruments are simple, but using the right one — and reading it correctly — is where accuracy comes from. Here are the five measuring tools worth knowing and where each belongs.

1. The Boley gauge

A sliding caliper with a vernier or dial scale, the Boley gauge is the lab and clinic workhorse for tooth width, arch measurement and model analysis. Our precision Boley gauge reads down to fine increments for model work.

2. Castroviejo calipers

Fine, spring-loaded calipers for small linear measurements — the kind of precise gap and dimension checks where a Boley gauge is too coarse. The Castroviejo calipers with a 0–20 mm scale are the instrument for delicate measurement.

3. Crown and wax gauges

A spring-loaded crown gauge checks the thickness of wax patterns and crowns before casting or fitting. The spring crown gauge reads thickness directly so you can confirm clearance — exactly the check the plaster-room and casting guide relies on.

5. Reading a measurement accurately

Three habits keep measurement honest: close the jaws gently to the same light contact each time; read a vernier square-on to avoid parallax error; and check the zero before you trust a reading. A gauge that has been dropped and sprung will read confidently and wrongly.

6. Provenance and care
