Wax carving gets the attention, but a crown or casting is only as good as the model it is built on and the investment it is cast into. The plaster room is the unglamorous half of the lab bench — and the tools there are simple, durable and worth getting right. This is a tour of the kit that turns powder and wax into a clean result.
1. Mixing: bowls and spatulas
Consistent mixing is the foundation. A flexible rubber investment mixing bowl flexes to release set material cleanly, and a stiff-bladed stainless plaster-mixing spatula set works the mix without folding in air. Two bowls — one for plaster, one for investment — keeps materials uncontaminated.
2. Trimming: plaster shears
Once a model is set, surgical-steel plaster shears take down bulk and tidy margins faster and more controllably than grinding everything back. A sharp, well-jointed pair saves both time and the model.
3. Casting: the lost-wax workflow
Lost-wax casting is the classic route from wax pattern to metal: the pattern is invested, the wax burned out, and metal cast into the void. A lab saw frame sections sprues and castings, and a polished-steel alcohol spirit lamp provides the clean, controllable flame for softening and adding wax. 4. Measuring belongs here too

5. What separates good lab tools
- Spatula stiffness — a blade that holds its shape works the mix; a whippy one does not.
- Shear edges — cleanly ground and well-jointed, with no play.
- Corrosion resistance — plaster and investment are abrasive and damp, so finish quality decides how long a tool lasts.
6. Provenance and care
