The case for cassettes is mostly invisible: fewer handling steps means fewer sharps injuries, less instrument damage in transit, and set-ups that arrive at the chair complete rather than assembled from a drawer. The choice between locking cassettes, open racks and flat trays is really a choice about workflow.
What each format does best
- Locking cassettes hold each instrument in its own silicone or steel rail, hinged shut. Instruments are cleaned, sterilised, stored and carried in the same unit — the gold standard for fixed procedure set-ups (an examination set, an extraction set) and for sharps safety, because nobody handles loose instruments.
- Open racks hold five to ten hinged or straight instruments upright with maximum steam access — quick to load and ideal where set composition changes case by case.
- Perforated flat trays are the flexible workhorse: bulk capacity for mixed loads, lab instruments and oddly shaped items, at the cost of instruments resting against each other.
Sizing and compatibility
Measure your steriliser chamber before buying — the common 18 cm and 28 cm cassette formats exist precisely because bench-top vacuum autoclave chambers are tight. Count instruments per procedure set-up, then add two slots: sets grow. Perforation matters more than gauge; steam must reach every surface, which is also why overfilled cassettes fail sterilisation logic even when they fit the chamber. Workflow patterns that work
Practices that run smoothly tend to standardise: one cassette per procedure type, contents listed and laminated in the decon room, instruments returned to the same slot every cycle.
