Sectional matrix systems have taken much of the limelight, but the Tofflemire-style retainer remains the universal answer for large Class II restorations, cusp-replacement amalgams and any case where a full circumferential wall is needed. It is also a small mechanism with several moving parts — which is exactly where cheap versions fail.

How it works, briefly

A matrix band loops through the retainer's head; the inner knurled nut drives a sliding body that tightens the loop around the tooth, while the outer nut locks the band in the head. The head's open side faces gingivally so the retainer slides off the band at the end without disturbing the new restoration — the detail every student learns the hard way.

Straight vs contra-angle

The straight (No. 1-style) pattern handles most premolar and accessible molar work from the buccal. A contra-angle head stands the mechanism away from the arch, reaching distal molars and awkward quadrants where the straight head fouls the cheek — practices doing significant posterior work usually keep both on the restorative tray. Bands and build quality

Bands come in gauges (thinner burnishes to contact more easily; thicker resists tearing on tight contacts) and shapes for differing gingival depths. On the retainer itself, check that the threads run smoothly under finger pressure alone, that the slot edges in the head are deburred (rough slots shred bands), and that the body is stainless throughout — the mechanism lives in the autoclave, so the hinge-and-thread care habits apply.
