Every impression, model and casting starts the same way: powder, liquid, bowl, spatula. The materials science gets the attention, but the mixing hardware quietly decides whether you get a smooth, bubble-free mix or a gritty one — and it costs less than almost anything else on the bench.
1. Why bowls are rubber
A mixing bowl flexes for a reason. Pressing the spatula against a compliant wall lets you smear the mix thin and collapse air bubbles — the motion that matters for alginate and investment alike. And when yesterday’s plaster has set hard in the bowl, one squeeze cracks it free in a piece. The flexible black investment bowl does both jobs; buy two so a setting mix never blocks the next one.
2. The spatula is half the mix
Alginate and plaster want a stiff, broad blade that sweeps the bowl wall — the two-piece stainless plaster spatula set covers the small and large bowl sizes. 3. Technique in one paragraph
Measured water first, powder into water, incorporate gently, then spatulate firmly against the bowl wall with a rotating wrist while turning the bowl — for alginate, aim to finish within the working time rather than racing the clock at the pour. Vibrate or tap the loaded bowl to raise remaining air before it goes anywhere near a tray or ring.
4. Downstream on the bench

5. Care and honesty
Rinse bowls before the mix sets, flex out cured residue, and replace a bowl whose wall has gone stiff or nicked — flexibility is the tool.
